Mission Statement

The Biorisk Management Office of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine of the Department of Health is committed in ensuring a safe and secured laboratory working environment by providing a risk based-mitigation and control of biological risks, expanding professional awareness on biosafety and biosecurity, developing biosafety officers and leaders, and striving for continuous improvement towards a sustainable culture of biological safety towards global health security.

Objectives

  • Expand professional awareness on biosafety through effective communication, training, orientation and related capacity building activities.
  • Develop biological risk management policy, procedure, guidelines and recommendation for handling, testing, transport, storage and banking high risk and emerging pathogens.  
  • Reduce the risk of exposure to biological agents and hazardous biological materials
  • Facilitate compliance with the International and local laboratory biorisk management standards and,
  • Advance biological safety as a scientific discipline through education, research and professional development.

Functions

The Biorisk Management Office shall: 

  • Strengthen the Biorisk Management Program of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine – DOH;
  • Develop and improve institutional biorisk management policies, codes of practice, and guidelines for handling high risk pathogens and emerging infectious disease agents;
  • Review and endorse approval of research proposal and protocols requiring biosafety/biosecurity clearance;
  • Conduct biosafety, biosecurity and biorisk management training, education, awareness campaign and other related professional development activities promoting biosafety and biosecurity;
  • Conduct research relevant to the advancement of biosafety, biosecurity, and biorisk management practices.
